The tops of the willows were peeled to give them a more graphic quality, at the same time emphasizing their structure. They were to bud below this section, starting their growth. The title merging grids was chosen to foretell the situation after the workers would have incorporated the systematically planted willows into the osier by cutting them down to a practical height. So the system is still there today but has been absorbed in the totality.
